Toile
Inspired by traditional toile patterns, this wallpaper design depicts scenery from the East Lawrence neighborhood in Kansas where I live. During daily walks, I would observe homes in transition due to construction, renovation, destruction, or neglect. Using images of both disrepair and renewal, I created a landscape that aims to reflect my contemporary, urban surroundings. The resulting repeated pattern creates a contemporary version of the typically pastoral toile patterns from the 18th century. This Toile pattern took on multiple forms, as lithographic prints, printed fabrics, and wallpaper. The initial lithographic print was part of a wallpaper print portfolio titled In the Background, that I organized and curated. This print portfolio is in the permanent collection of Spencer Museum of Art in Lawrence, KS and RISD Museum in Providence, RI. The wallpaper version of this piece is permanently installed in Capitol Federal Hall in Lawrence, KS as part of the KU School of Business collection..
